The acclaimed music producer and Coded Tunez executive, Olumide Ogunade, known as ID Cabasa, reflected on the emotional impact of Olamide’s departure from his record label.
Speaking on the Afrobeats Podcast with Adesope Olajide, ID Cabasa recounted the circumstances surrounding Olamide’s decision to leave.
He recounted first encountering the YBNL boss when Olamide was just 13 years old, visiting his studio with a friend to record a song. Despite his friend’s lack of talent, everything changed when Olamide took the microphone and delivered an impressive 16 bars.
ID Cabasa shared how he reluctantly gave his blessings when Olamide expressed his desire to leave, despite his efforts to persuade him otherwise.
In 2012, Olamide parted ways with Coded Tunes to establish his own record label, YBNL Nation. The label has since signed notable artists such as Adekunle Gold and Lil Kesh, and currently boasts talents like Asake and Fireboy DML.
ID Cabasa said;
“Olamide was 13 years old when I met him. He came to my studio with a friend who wanted to feature him on a song. His friend was not good musically. Olamide was quiet and unassuming. I gave him a beat, and he did 16 bars that changed everything. Olamide became more like a son to me.
“When he was about to leave my record label, we sat down to discuss it. It was painful to me. It wasn’t the pain of not wanting him to progress; it was the pain of seeing someone you love leave. I cried.
“I said, ‘Olamide, you should’ve waited o!’ He said, ‘Bros, I want to do something, and I’m sure, by your code, we might not be able to do some of them.’ We didn’t have a fight. I gave him my full blessings.”
