A 23-year-old man known only as Samson has been detained by the Delta State Police Command for allegedly stabbing his mother to death in Obiaruku, Delta State.
After finishing secondary school, Samson was sent to Asaba, the state capital, to learn a trade. However, a few months later, he was brought back after getting involved with a group of drug users, which resulted in brain damage.
Upon his return to Obiaruku, his mother took him to a local mental health center for treatment. According to reports, Samson killed his mother with a knife after she confronted him while he was smoking around five in the morning.
An anonymous eyewitness told Vanguard about the incident, stating, “They live on Jehovah Street, Obiedike, close to my shop.”
The mother was in her 50s, not yet 60.
“At around 5 a.m., the mother saw her son smoking and confronted him, saying it was too early. Perhaps she shouted at him. Samson then went inside, got a knife, and stabbed her. The elder brother, who suffers from sickle cell disease, shouted, prompting people to enter the compound, which was still locked.”
Neighbors also informed reporters that Samson had developed a drug addiction since returning from Asaba. They added that he was standing near his mother’s body when state police arrived to arrest him.
