In a tragic turn of events, the usually serene Okpare Olomu Community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State was thrown into mourning on Wednesday following the brutal murder of Rev. Isaac Umurie, an Anglican priest, by his son, Ufuoma Umurie.
Reports indicate that the priest was killed in his sleep, suffering fatal machete blows to the head.
Rev. Umurie was a clergy member at St. John’s Anglican Church, Okpare-Olomu.
A vigilante member stated that the incident occurred around 2 a.m., and the priest’s wife narrowly escaped.
Sources revealed this was the second time the suspect had attacked his father. Multiple sources in the community suspect Ufuoma may be mentally unstable.
The suspect allegedly chased his mother as she tried to save her husband, but she escaped unharmed.
“This is the second time Ufuoma has attacked his father. The first time, he beat him, and the Okpare-Olomu vigilante held him, but his father pleaded not to take him to the police. We believe he is not mentally stable.
“In this incident, he hacked his father with a cutlass, burst his skull, and mutilated other parts of his body.
“The priest was close to retirement and had been brought closer to home in preparation for this before the unfortunate incident,” a source explained.
The suspect has been apprehended and handed over to the police at the Otu-Jeremi Divisional Headquarters for prosecution.
Delta State Police Command spokesman, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident in a brief text message on Wednesday.
