Veteran Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD) has stirred conversations by stating that having a daughter is more valuable than having three sons.
The actor made this bold assertion while addressing societal norms that often place higher value on male children in African cultures.
RMD shared a deeply personal story to highlight his perspective. He recalled how, during his father’s illness, his sisters stepped up to provide care.
One sister quit her job to stay with their father, while another put her business on hold to assist. In contrast, RMD revealed that none of the brothers made similar sacrifices.
“When my father was ill, my sister left her job to stay with him. My other sister left her business to work shifts with her. None of us boys left our business or work,” RMD admitted.
He criticized men who lament having only daughters, describing such complaints as ungrateful and misguided. “Yet you foolishly complain that you have only girls? You have hit a jackpot,” he stated.
RMD went on to emphasize the unique qualities of daughters, noting that they often care deeply for their parents, are less likely to rebel, and are willing to take their aging parents into their homes if necessary.
“Each of your daughters is worth three sons! Having a daughter prolongs your life. She will not get into as much trouble as your sons,” he said.
The actor encouraged fathers of daughters to appreciate their blessings, urging them to value the role daughters play in extending the love and care parents receive in their later years.
RMD’s heartfelt comments have resonated with many, sparking widespread reflection on the cultural biases against female children in parts of Africa.
