A Nigerian woman has sued her grandmother for an unpaid debt of N95,000 (about $250 USD) borrowed five months earlier.
The granddaughter claims that her grandmother promised to repay the loan in June but now refuses, arguing she doesn’t need to repay it since she cares for and supports her granddaughter.
The grandmother contends that she has financed her granddaughter’s education and living expenses, including housing and clothing, and thus shouldn’t have to repay the loan.
This case underscores the complex family dynamics and financial disagreements involved.
In her defense, the grandmother said:
“The girl stays in my house for free, eats my food, and I buy clothes for her. She is living with me, and I pay the rent. I told her I needed the money for my shop and borrowed N95,000, promising to repay it in June.
“While I initially said I would pay her back, I don’t intend to because she is my child. Why should I repay her? If I tell her I won’t repay, she won’t lend me money again. I will repay her if she calms down, but not now. After all, I took care of her from primary to secondary school.”
