Adeleke Adeyinka, a councillorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Ward 15 in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State, was tragically shot and killed by unknown gunmen on Saturday, October 12, 2024.
The incident occurred around the popular Oke Ilewo area in Abeokuta, the state capital, just weeks before the local government elections scheduled for November 16, 2024.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants, who were driving a car with tinted windows, opened fire on Adeyinka and subsequently hit him with a stone before fleeing the scene.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the killing, stating that efforts are underway to apprehend the suspects.
According to Omolola Odutola, spokesperson for the state police, “The incident was reported around 12:30 pm when a concerned citizen informed us that unknown individuals, believed to be cultists, arrived in an unregistered Toyota Corolla Sports car and attacked the victim. They fired several shots and fled to an unknown location.”
The APC Youth Leaders’ Forum of Ogun State condemned the killing in strong terms, calling it a “senseless and horrific act.” In a statement signed by youth leader Kabir Odedairo and spokesman Timothy Odedina, the group expressed outrage and grief over the brutal murder of Adeyinka, a promising young leader, and demanded a swift investigation.
“We strongly condemn this horrific act, which has shaken our community. The fact that Adeleke was shot and stoned to death is particularly disturbing and demands immediate attention from law enforcement agencies,” the statement read.
The group also urged authorities to bolster security in the area to prevent further violence, while extending their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
Adeyinka’s death marks a significant loss for the Ogun State youth community and raises concerns about election-related violence as the local government elections approach.
