Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has thrown his weight behind Afrobeats sensation Davido, following the uproar over the singer’s remarks on Nigeria’s struggling economy.
In a recent interview, Davido advised African Americans against relocating to Africa, citing the challenges posed by Nigeria’s economic situation.
The comment sparked widespread criticism, with many calling for the artist to apologize.
Kanayo, however, took to Instagram from the UK to defend Davido, emphasizing the singer’s right to freedom of speech.
The actor argued that Davido’s statement was made in good faith and urged Nigerians to focus on holding leaders accountable instead of targeting the artist.
“Nigerians, leave Davido alone about the comment he made; it’s freedom of speech, and he made it in good faith. It is left for those in power to work harder to give us a better Nigeria. We need to build a better Nigeria,” Kanayo stated in the video.
Addressing calls for an apology, Kanayo firmly asked, “Apologize for what? He’s a Nigerian, and he made his statement in good faith. Those who criticize us want the best out of us. Davido and his family can feed well, but he speaks for other Nigerians who cannot.”
The actor’s remarks have sparked further debate, with some praising his stance and others criticizing his defense of Davido.
