The Federal Government has suspended senior officers in charge of the Maximum and Medium Security Custodial Centres in Kirikiri, Lagos, following allegations of misconduct linked to crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky.
The scandal emerged after an audio leak revealed that Bobrisky, who was convicted and sentenced to six months in prison, was allegedly housed in an apartment outside the custodial center.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, September 26, Ja’afaru Ahmed, Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), confirmed the suspension of the officers.
He stated that the action was taken to allow for further investigation into the allegations, adding that the outcome of the investigation would be made public.
Among those suspended are Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC), in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, and Sikiru Adekunle, Deputy Controller of Corrections, in charge of the Maximum-Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos.
Additionally, ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna, serving at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Afikpo, Ebonyi State, was suspended for allegedly escorting a convicted inmate out of the facility.
In a separate case, Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, Deputy Controller of Corrections at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, Abuja, was also suspended for allegedly accepting money on behalf of an inmate.
The Federal Government’s swift action aims to maintain the integrity of the Nigerian Correctional Service amid the growing public outcry surrounding the Bobrisky saga.
