The Nigerian national grid has faced another significant setback, collapsing once more on Tuesday and plunging the country into darkness.
This recent failure has raised concerns among citizens and stakeholders regarding the stability of power supply in the nation.
According to an announcement on the Nigeria National Grid’s official X handle, the collapse resulted in a total power generation drop to zero megawatts (MW) across all major stations.
As of 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, generation readings from key power plants, including Afam IV & V, Azura-Edo, Egbin, and Shiroro, reported no output, marking a troubling trend for the energy sector.
In response to the ongoing crisis, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has revealed plans for a preventive maintenance operation on the Ife-Ondo 132kV transmission line scheduled for Wednesday, November 6, 2024.
This essential maintenance, set to take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., may further affect power supply in the surrounding areas.
Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN, emphasized the importance of the maintenance work in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of the national grid.
She explained that the maintenance is necessary for TCN Lines Maintenance Engineers to conduct trace maintenance between Towers 6 and 12.
As a result, Benin Distribution Company (DisCo) will be unable to provide electricity to customers on the Ondo and Okitipupa 33kV feeders during this period.
Mbah assured the public that bulk power supply would be restored immediately upon completion of the maintenance, urging residents to bear with the company as they work diligently to address the challenges facing the national grid.
As Nigeria grapples with these recurring power outages, the urgency for a stable and reliable electricity supply remains a pressing concern for both citizens and the government.
