The Dangote Refinery is on the verge of commencing petrol sales to the public, pending final discussions with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), according to a reliable sources.
Mr. Aliko Dangote, the president of the Dangote Group, announced that the petroleum products would be available on the market within the next 48 hours.
The refinery is scheduled to supply a total of 25 million liters of petrol to the Nigerian market in September. This figure is expected to rise to 30 million liters per day by October 2024.
The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) confirmed the development, adding that it met with NNPCL to finalize the agreement on local crude supply to the refinery.
The deal allows for crude oil sales and supply to Dangote Refinery in local currency, naira.
In a short statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the NMDPRA noted, “The refinery is now poised to supply an initial 25 million liters of PMS into the domestic market this September. This amount will subsequently increase to 30 million liters daily from October 2024.”
In a recent live broadcast, Aliko Dangote officially announced that the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Lagos had begun producing petrol.
He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for approving the sale of crude oil to local refineries in naira, emphasizing that the refinery’s output would significantly impact Nigeria’s energy landscape.
Dangote also noted that many had doubted the possibility of the $20 billion refinery starting petrol production, but the achievement marks a milestone that is set to meet both local and regional energy demands.
