Popular Nigerian singer, Rema, has just won the Best Afro Beats song award for his song ‘Calm Down’, featuring his American friend, Selena Gomez, at the MTV Video Music Awards last night.
The event took place last night, 12th September, 2023, at the Prudential Center, Newwark in New Jersey, USA.
Rema, while appreciating the starters of afrobeats especially in Nigeria, he said God bless Fela who started afrobeat, shout-out to 2baba, Don Jazzy, Dbanj, Dprince, Runtown, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido, Timaya etc.
His song ‘Calm Down’, managed to beat fellow Afro Beats stars Burna Boy- It’s Plenty; Fireboy DML & Asake – Bandana; Libianca – People; and Wizkid Featuring Ayra Starr – 2 Sugar.

Calm down was also nominated in 2 other categories for best collaboration and song of the year.
