In a significant boost for federal government employees, civil servants will start receiving the newly approved minimum wage from Thursday, September 26, 2024.
This announcement was made by Bawa Mokwa, the spokesperson for the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, during an exclusive interview with newsmen.
Mokwa assured that civil servants could expect to see alerts for their new minimum wage salaries beginning today.
However, he did not clarify whether the payments would include any arrears owed to workers, leaving some questions unanswered regarding the full financial implications of this adjustment.
“The Federal Government civil servants will start getting the new minimum wage from today. What I can tell you is that the minimum wage salary payment is today; I am not sure of the arrears,” Mokwa stated.
This announcement follows a confirmation from Ekpo Nta, Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, earlier this week, that the government has officially approved the upward review of the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) in line with the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act of 2024. This move was initiated after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 on July 18, 2024, which was subsequently passed into law by the Senate.
The implementation of this new minimum wage marks a pivotal moment for civil servants, who have been anticipating the changes promised by the government.
