Endocrinologists have raised concerns about the abnormal development of breast tissue in men, commonly known as gynaecomastia, stressing the need for immediate medical evaluation.
Experts say breast enlargement in males may indicate underlying health issues such as hormonal imbalances, liver or kidney disease, or even certain medications.
During an interview, two consultants advised men experiencing unusual breast growth to consult a healthcare provider promptly.
They warned that, while the condition can be benign, early diagnosis is critical to prevent complications or prolonged discomfort.
Professor Oladapo Ashiru, a renowned reproductive endocrinologist, emphasized that gynaecomastia can result from hormonal imbalances or the consumption of oestrogen-rich foods.
He noted that early detection is key, as unchecked hormonal disturbances could lead to fertility issues in the future.
He urged parents of boys showing signs of breast development to seek professional advice, cautioning that delays could exacerbate potential health concerns.
Supporting this stance, Dr Oluwakemi Ashubu, a consultant paediatric endocrinologist, explained that although some cases of gynaecomastia might resolve naturally, especially during puberty, persistent symptoms require clinical investigation.
She added that medications, particularly those for renal issues, could also cause temporary breast enlargement, which usually subsides once the medication is discontinued.
Both experts underscored the importance of addressing the condition early, warning that ignoring it could lead to psychological distress and future infertility if related to hormonal imbalances.
