In recent comments, Nigerian Afrobeats producer and recording artist Samuel Oguachuba, popularly known as Samklef, voiced his thoughts on why Davido is often met with disrespect in the industry.
Samklef’s statements come after Nigerian YouTuber Korty EO publicly criticized Davido’s team for retracting permission to re-edit and share an old interview, leading to online debate around Davido’s interactions in the industry.
Skit maker Nasty Blaq also weighed in, showing support for Davido, stating that the artist continually tries to help others but often faces backlash.
Reacting to Blaq’s remarks, Samklef argued that Davido’s approach to helping others might be the reason he faces such treatment.
Comparing him to another Nigerian star, Olamide, Samklef pointed out that while Olamide has helped many, he doesn’t seem to attract the same level of criticism as Davido.
According to Samklef, “Olamide has helped a lot more people than Davido; why are people not disrespecting him? Davido brought it to himself!
This is what happens when you are always trying to look good in the eyes of everybody! You dey help based on expectations! Based on control. I gat love for him; he just needs to stop playing victims!”
He further commented on how Wizkid, another industry giant, manages to assist people without publicizing his actions, subtly implying that Davido’s public image could be affecting the respect he receives.
The discussion has sparked wider industry reflection on Davido’s public persona and interactions.
His cousin, Adenike Adeleke, also commented, suggesting that Davido’s accessibility might be mistaken for weakness.
This statement resonates amid recent social media disputes and past controversies involving Davido and other industry figures, including Samklef himself, with whom he has had several public disagreements.
The back-and-forth raises questions about how fame and approach to philanthropy can shape an artist’s relationship with both fans and industry insiders.
Samklef has since called on Davido to reconcile with those he may have wronged, advising him to follow Wizkid’s example of quiet generosity to regain respect in the industry.
