Prince Henry Odianosen Okojie, a federal lawmaker representing the Esan North-East/Esan South-East Federal Constituency in Edo State, has reportedly survived an assassination attempt at his residence in Uromi.
According to a statement released by his media aide, Michael Ihaza, the attack occurred on the morning of Friday, September 20, when armed men, suspected to be political thugs, stormed Okojie’s home.
The assailants, who disguised themselves as police officers, claimed they had an appointment with the lawmaker and gained access to his sitting room.
Fortunately, the intervention of security personnel attached to Okojie thwarted the attempt, forcing two of the armed attackers to flee.
However, the lawmaker’s driver and another suspect were apprehended and are currently being interrogated by officers at the Area Command of the Nigeria Police Force in Uromi.
The arrested suspects have reportedly confessed to being sent on the mission by political figures linked to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Esan North-East Local Government Area.
The incident has sparked concerns about the rising tensions ahead of the Edo gubernatorial election, with many calling for heightened security around political figures and candidates involved in the race.
