Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has renamed the popular Obinagu Road in Abakpa Nike, Enugu East Council Area, in honor of highlife music legend, Chief Mike Ejeagha.
The rechristening, which took place on Monday, was part of the inauguration of four newly constructed and reconstructed roads in the area.
The renamed road will now be known as Mike Ejeagha Road, paying tribute to the cultural contributions of the renowned musician.
Governor Mbah highlighted Ejeagha’s influence on the arts, noting how his folk songs brought the rich heritage of Enugu to life for many.
During the ceremony, the governor announced that the state government would take full responsibility for Ejeagha’s upkeep, describing him as “a living legend.”
The gesture reflects the administration’s commitment to honoring cultural icons and preserving the state’s artistic legacy.
In addition to Mike Ejeagha Road, other roads inaugurated include Mike Ejeagha Crescent, Texaco Bus Stop-Ifo Road, and Nkpor Street. Mbah emphasized that these projects mark the beginning of a new era in road infrastructure across Enugu State.
Governor Mbah also reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving urban infrastructure, stating that the government had completed 71 urban roads since 2023, with more projects in the pipeline.
The governor assured residents that the dualization of the Penocks Junction on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway to Opi-Nsukka would commence soon.
The governor’s visit to Ejeagha’s residence, where he was received by the musician’s children, underscored the personal significance of the road renaming.
Ejeagha’s family expressed deep appreciation for the honor, stating that it would be remembered beyond his lifetime.
