The Federal Government has announced free Caesarean sections for Nigerian women in need as part of a new initiative to reduce maternal and newborn mortality rates.
This was disclosed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Pate, during the ongoing three-day Nigeria Health Sector-Wide Joint Annual Review in Abuja.
“This initiative represents an ambitious commitment to saving lives and ensuring that no woman loses her life simply because she cannot afford a C-section,” Prof. Pate said.
The announcement was also shared on the official X handle of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, which described it as a “powerful move” to improve maternal health outcomes nationwide.
The program is expected to address the high cost of C-sections, a significant barrier to maternal healthcare access in the country.
While further details on implementation are awaited, this marks a major step toward ensuring equitable access to essential health services for women.
