A fire incident on Sunday, August 11, devastated the LG office located at Abule Osun, Trade Fair in Lagos State, causing the destruction of goods and electronics valued at millions of naira.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement provided to newsmen.
According to Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, the fire began in the early hours of the morning.
“LASEMA received distress calls through the 767 and 112 toll-free emergency lines at approximately 00:15 hrs and immediately activated the Lagos State Emergency Response Plans,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
Upon arriving at the scene at around 00:40 hrs, LASEMA responders discovered the fire raging throughout the entire LG office warehouse.
The fire severely damaged a wide range of items, including household goods, small forklifts, and electronics, all of which were estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of naira.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. However, LASEMA is working alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to contain the blaze and prevent further spread.
“LASEMA has also activated the fire unit to support the operation with several additional fire appliance trucks for quick intervention,” Oke-Osanyintolu added.
Fortunately, no fatalities or injuries were reported. The fire, however, has escalated to affect the entire premises. As a precaution, all responders and the entire LG staff have been relocated outside the premises for safety reasons.
The operation to contain the fire is still ongoing, with additional fire trucks expected to arrive. The Nigerian Army and the Police are also on the scene to assist with the situation.
