The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, visited Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Tuesday September 17 to commiserate with the victims of the recent flood disaster.
Obi, along with key leaders of the Obidient Movement and the party’s caretaker committee, met with Borno Governor Babagana Zulum and extended their condolences.
During the visit, Obi donated N50 million to the state’s emergency relief fund to support those affected by the floods, which have displaced thousands of residents and caused significant damage to properties.
Obi expressed deep concern over the loss of lives and the devastation caused by the disaster, urging swift relief efforts for those in need.
The former governor of Anambra was accompanied by his 2023 running mate, Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed; the caretaker committee chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman; the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, and other Labour Party leaders.
The delegation also paid a courtesy visit to the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar El-Kanemi, before touring the flood-stricken areas.
One of the stops included a visit to the spare parts market, where traders suffered significant losses, and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at Government College, where they met with survivors, including a woman who tragically lost her newborn twins to the flood.
In a statement released by his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, Obi reaffirmed the Labour Party’s commitment to aiding flood victims, pledging to continue supporting the rebuilding efforts in Borno.
“We stand with the people of Borno during this difficult time and will provide aid to help them recover from this tragedy,” Obi said.
He thanked the Borno State government for its ongoing support and offered prayers for the affected families.
The floods, which have submerged large portions of Maiduguri, have left the community in dire need of assistance as they begin the long journey toward recovery.
