In a concerning development, the WhatsApp number of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has reportedly been hacked and cloned by fraudsters.
The impostors have used the governor’s cloned number to engage in fraudulent activities, attempting to defraud unsuspecting individuals of millions of naira, according to multiple reports.
One of the fraudulent conversations involved the impostor requesting N7 million from a close associate of the governor, under the pretext that the governor, who is currently in the United States for a state function, needed the money urgently.
The funds were to be transferred to a specific account, with a promise of reimbursement later. However, the official in question became suspicious and informed key government officials, potentially averting the fraud.
The Chief Press Secretary and spokesman for the governor, Mr. Ekerete Udoh, confirmed the incident and warned the public to be vigilant.
He emphasized that the fraudulent messages being circulated on social media platforms were not from the governor and urged the public to disregard any solicitations for funds. Udoh also assured that law enforcement agencies have been notified and are actively pursuing the perpetrators.
This incident highlights the increasing sophistication of cybercriminals who exploit the trust and reputation of public officials to carry out fraudulent schemes.
The public is advised to exercise caution and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
