Ghana’s state-owned electricity company has announced a three-week power outage due to a decrease in gas supply from Nigeria, exacerbating the country’s long-standing electricity shortages, known locally as “dumsor.”
This gas supply reduction, starting Wednesday, is due to maintenance by a Nigerian supplier and has led to lower power generation, prompting the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to implement load shedding.
The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) confirmed a decrease in gas volume because of a shutdown at a Nigerian facility, affecting gas supplies to Togo, Benin, and Ghana.
ECG is working with stakeholders to manage the shortage’s impact on consumers.
This comes after President Nana Akufo-Addo recently restricted electricity exports to neighboring countries due to local supply issues, amid worsening power shortages linked to Ghana’s severe economic crisis.
The state power company owes $1.6bn to private electricity suppliers, complicating the sector’s challenges.
