In a sad report reaching Becksblog.com.ng, that a business tycoon identified as Robert Onyejekwe, originally from Onitsha and residing in Sugar Land, Houston, Texas, was discovered dead in his Lagos, Nigeria hotel room.
Before his passing, Robert served as the President of Bits and Drilling Tools at Schlumberger, where he led one of its fastest-growing units focused on global strategy, technology, and business management. He introduced several innovative drilling technologies aimed at reducing costs in the oil and gas sector.
More recently, he was the Global Director of Sales and Commercial for Schlumberger’s Reservoir and Infrastructure group, overseeing strategies for eight business product lines to expand market reach.
Robert was also committed to educational development, volunteering since 2015 with Schlumberger’s Faculty of the Future initiative, which provides fellowships to women from developing countries for advanced STEM studies. He joined the Schlumberger Foundation board as a director in April 2017.
A prominent figure in the oil and gas industry, Robert recently hosted his annual OTC party in Houston. He had traveled to Nigeria for meetings related to the oil and gas company he had acquired four years prior and was planning to relocate to Lagos soon.
Reports suggest he discovered that the company’s managing director had been misappropriating funds, prompting his visit to address the issue. After attending meetings, he went to rest in his Ikoyi hotel room, where he was found dead on Sunday evening, June 10, 2024.
Robert was 51 years old. He held a BSc in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Ibadan, an MBA from the University of Rotterdam, and a diploma in Finance from IMD University, Switzerland. An active SPE member since 1996, he was named Executive of the Year by the University of Ibadan Alumni in 2018 for his leadership and management skills.
His wife and a family friend are reportedly on their way to Lagos to bring his body back to Houston for burial.
May his soul rest in peace, amen.
