In a deeply troubling incident, 23-year-old Ayomide Adeleye, a 300-level philosophy student at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), has confessed to the murder of Christiana Idowu, an 18-year-old student from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB).
Adeleye, who buried the victim in his parents’ home in Ikorodu, Lagos, expressed regret, stating, “I regret killing Christiana because my mum and her mum were friends.”
Adeleye, who is currently in the custody of the Lagos State Police Command Tactical Unit in Ikeja, narrated the series of events that led to the tragic incident.
He explained that Christiana had contacted him multiple times to repair her phone, as he had done before. On the day of the crime, Christiana, who was also undergoing Industrial Training (IT) at Yaba College of Technology, visited Adeleye at his home with the hope of fixing her faulty phone.
Recounting the details, Adeleye said, “I hadn’t been home for over six months. Christiana called me when I returned to Lagos, and I told her I was available to fix her phone. She came over, and after assessing the phone, I realized it only had battery and screen issues.”
Unfortunately, the meeting turned deadly when, overwhelmed by financial difficulties, Adeleye decided to strangle Christiana while she was distracted.
He then tried to cover up the crime by calling her mother, falsely claiming that Christiana had been kidnapped and demanding a ransom.
However, vigilant police officers intervened, preventing him from hurting himself while he was in the cell.
