The chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has declared his intention to resign if the former governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello, is not prosecuted.
Olukoyede made this statement during a press briefing in Abuja, emphasizing the need to pursue Bello’s prosecution despite his evasion of arrest.
Despite the EFCC filing a 19-count charge against Bello for alleged money laundering amounting to N80.2bn, he has refused to appear in court.
Olukoyede affirmed the EFCC’s commitment to see Bello’s case through to the end and promised to bring to justice anyone who obstructed his arrest.
Additionally, Olukoyede revealed that the EFCC has frozen over 300 accounts linked to illicit foreign exchange trading and highlighted the significant losses Nigerian banks suffered due to internet fraud in 2022.
He stressed the prevalence of cybercrime in Nigeria and the agency’s efforts to combat it, including the establishment of a cybercrime research center aimed at reorienting convicted internet fraudsters towards positive contributions to society.
