Security at the Sapele Correctional Centre in Delta State has been tightened following the escape of an inmate named Paul Michael.
The escape happened over the weekend, soon after Mr. Raymond Neagu started his role as the new Controller of State Corrections.
Michael was accused of murdering Kelly Onojaiyefe, a furniture apprentice from Oghara town in the Ethiope West Local Government Area.
On June 5, the command’s spokesperson, Mr. Ikechukwu Iloba, confirmed the incident in Asaba, expressing confusion over how Michael managed to escape despite the facility’s strict security measures.
“The Controller is upset by this development and has immediately initiated investigations into the incident,” he stated.
“The Command will not overlook this matter as the Controller General Zone G has ordered an investigation to understand the direct and indirect causes of the escape.
“The Controller has formed an investigative team with himself as Chairman, following instructions from the Controller General Zone G, and anyone found responsible will be sanctioned accordingly.”
Iloba added that the command has sent out a search team to recapture the escapee, assuring that there is no cause for alarm.
He noted that the controller has deployed a detailed squadron commander, who is armed to enhance the center’s security until the investigation is completed.
