The Lagos State government has announced receiving additional support from the World Health Organization (WHO) to combat a cholera outbreak at Kirikiri prison.
In a statement released on Sunday, Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, Director of Public Affairs, quoted Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, saying that an outbreak of 25 cases of severe gastroenteritis caused by cholera had occurred at Kirikiri Medium Security Prison.
Urgent medical and environmental interventions have been successfully implemented.
Providing further updates on the cholera outbreak after the “One Health” inter-governmental agency strategic meeting over the weekend, Abayomi stated that no new cholera-related deaths have been reported in the past 72 hours.
However, the government is intensifying efforts to stop transmission.
