Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has removed Solomon Arase from his role as chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC).
In an announcement made by the Presidency on Monday night, Tinubu named retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashimu Argungu as the new chairman.
Additionally, Chief Onyemuche Nnamani has been appointed as Secretary and retired DIG Taiwo Lakanu as a member of the Commission, subject to Senate approval.
More appointments to the Police Service Commission are expected in the future.
The President also appointed Mr. Mohammed Sheidu as the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), with immediate effect.
The statement, issued by presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale, emphasized that “The President expects absolute demonstration of integrity, diligence, and patriotic zeal in the discharge of these important functions for the overall wellbeing of the Nigeria Police and the nation.”
Arase was appointed Chairman of the Police Service Commission in January 2023 by former president Muhammadu Buhari.
He had also served as the 18th Inspector-General of the Nigerian Police (IGP) after Suleiman Abba was dismissed.
Before becoming IGP, Arase headed the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, the premier intelligence unit of the Nigerian police.
