A 45-year-old Indonesian man is facing charges after allegedly killing his 60-year-old neighbour following ongoing comments about his marital status.
The incident, which occurred on the evening of July 29, has shocked the local community in the South Tapanuli regency.
Indonesian media outlets reported that the victim, Asgim Irianto, a retired civil servant, was attacked by his neighbour, Parlindungan Siregar, after persistent inquiries about why he remained unmarried at 45.
According to Assistant Police Commissioner (AKP) Maria Marpaung, who spoke to the media on July 31, the altercation began when Parlindungan arrived at Asgim’s home around 8 PM, armed with a piece of wood. Without warning, he began attacking Asgim, prompting the victim to flee into the street.
Witnesses reported that Parlindungan pursued Asgim and struck him on the head, causing him to collapse.
The assailant continued the assault until local residents intervened. Despite their efforts to rush Asgim to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries before arrival.
Police swiftly apprehended Parlindungan within an hour of the attack. During questioning, he admitted to being deeply hurt and angered by Asgim’s frequent and jesting questions about his unmarried status, which had become a point of contention.
The two neighbours also had prior disputes over their chickens wandering into each other’s coops.
The tragic event has ignited discussions about the pressures and social stigmas surrounding marital status in Indonesia. Local authorities urge the public to be mindful and respectful of personal boundaries to prevent similar incidents.
As the investigation continues, Parlindungan remains in custody and is expected to face serious charges for the fatal assault.
