Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has reportedly surrendered to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after months of evading arrest over an ₦80 billion fraud allegation.
The ex-governor, who had previously ignored several summons from the anti-graft agency, was declared wanted in April 2024 for failing to appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja to face charges of money laundering.
Bello’s decision to turn himself in followed consultations with his family, legal team, and political allies, according to a statement from his media office.
Reports had surfaced suggesting that Bello had been hiding within the Kogi State Government House to avoid arrest.
However, in his statement, the ex-governor emphasized that his absence was due to efforts to seek the enforcement of his fundamental rights. His legal team had reportedly been present at every court hearing on the matter.
The statement further noted, “The former Governor, who has great respect for the rule of law and constituted authority, has now chosen to honour the invitation of the EFCC to clear his name. He has nothing to hide or fear.”
Bello expressed confidence in the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to combat corruption and advance Nigeria’s economic development.
He also highlighted his anti-corruption measures during his time as governor, claiming that he was the first to establish a system to curb graft in Kogi State.
Accompanied by high-profile Nigerians, Bello reportedly arrived at the EFCC Headquarters in Abuja.
His media team urged the agency to uphold his fundamental rights as a citizen during their investigation.
