A Nigerian lady recently took to social media to share the shocking reason her boyfriend of three years ended their relationship.
According to her, the breakup stemmed from her participation in a traditional “Rag Day” event at her school.
Rag Day, an event where students dress in outlandish or “ragged” clothing to raise funds for charity, seems to have sparked unexpected tension in her relationship.
In a leaked WhatsApp conversation, the boyfriend expressed his displeasure with her participation in the event.
In the chat, the boyfriend said: “What was the meaning of that rubbish you did yesterday all in the name of Rag Day?”
Trying to calm him down, she replied: “Hey babe, calm down. It’s just a rag in school.”
However, her attempt to explain only seemed to fuel his anger. “What stupid Rag Day abi madness day?” he retorted, clearly upset.
The girlfriend, sensing his frustration, apologized, saying, “Babe stop it na. Okay, please I’m sorry. It’s just for fun and students’ aid day.”
But the boyfriend remained unconvinced, saying, “See ehn, I couldn’t even believe that was you, I’m even scared. Let’s not stress this, I’m not sure this can even work again, I don’t know if I’m dating a mad person. Do you know how many of my friends saw you yesterday?? Did you see yourself? I’m so ashamed of you.”
In a final blow, he added, “How can you expect me to date someone like this? After all you did yesterday.”
The girlfriend, desperate to salvage their relationship, pleaded with him: “We’ve been together for 3 years now. You can’t just break up with me now because of this na… Baby, please don’t do this to me na. Just tell me you’re joking, please.”
Despite her attempts to reconcile, the boyfriend made it clear that their relationship was over. “This thing called a relationship between us is over. I can’t do it anymore. Goodbye, please,” he stated before refusing to answer her calls.
The story has since sparked debates online, with many expressing sympathy for the lady while others discussed the extreme reaction of her boyfriend.
Rag Day is a long-standing tradition in many Nigerian universities, but this incident highlights how something intended for fun can have unintended consequences.
