Umara, son of Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, denied allegations on Thursday, July 18, of killing someone in India.
The state government had previously refuted reports of the governor’s son being arrested for the alleged murder.
Social media reports claimed that Umara, a student at a university in New Delhi, struck a Chinese national with a bottle at a nightclub over a dispute involving a woman.
Abdurrahman Ahmed Bundi, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Zulum on New Media, issued a statement on Wednesday, clarifying that none of the governor’s sons were arrested, charged, or involved in any unlawful activities.
Bundi advised the public to be cautious about the information they consume and share.
On Thursday, Umara publicly refuted the viral allegation, calling it baseless and untrue.
He addressed the claim in a 35-second video posted on social media.
Reportedly speaking at the Government House in Maiduguri, Umara stated that the accusation was an attempt to tarnish his father’s reputation.
“Dear esteemed Nigerians, I am Umara Babagana Umara Zulum. I am here to address the damaging falsehood that has been made against me.
“I have noticed a baseless accusation against me, claiming that I killed someone at a nightclub. This is not true. They want to tarnish my father’s name. I have been with my family in Maiduguri for the past two months,” he said.
