The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced the Device Management System (NCC-DMS), a comprehensive Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) aimed at regulating mobile devices connecting to the nation’s communication networks.
This initiative, part of the newly introduced ‘Type Approval Business Rule 2024,’ mandates all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in the country to integrate with the NCC-DMS.
The system is designed to tighten control over mobile devices, improve security measures, and enforce compliance with regulatory standards.
The NCC-DMS will function as a centralised database, enabling the tracking of devices across all MNOs in Nigeria. By registering and monitoring devices, the NCC aims to combat the use of unauthorized devices and reduce issues such as phone theft and mobile-related fraud.
The NCC emphasized that all MNOs must connect to the NCC-DMS and implement network policies set by the Commission to ensure a unified approach to device regulation.
The system will capture the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) of all devices on the network and synchronize this data with international IMEI databases to further enhance security.
This initiative reflects the NCC’s commitment to enhancing mobile device management and protecting users across Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape.
