A bizarre incident shocked the Ebelle community in Edo State yesterday when a newly-wedded man, Osamudiame Iyobosa, returned his wife, Edeki, to her parents, citing her “wide kpekus” as the reason for his decision.
Eyewitnesses said Iyobosa, who arrived at his in-laws’ house in Ubiaja in a green-colored Golf 4, openly declared that he could not continue the marriage due to the alleged state of his wife’s private part.
He claimed it was evidence of her past promiscuity, accusing her of having been with too many men before their union.
The incident sparked mixed reactions across the community.
While some residents expressed shock at Iyobosa’s behavior, others found humor in his actions, labeling his excuse childish and insensitive.
Edeki’s parents were reportedly furious over the public embarrassment.
Her mother, according to witnesses, lashed out at Iyobosa, calling him a “half man” and questioning his masculinity for exposing their family to ridicule.
However, not everyone disagreed with Iyobosa’s claims. A local palm wine seller near Ubiaja market alleged that Edeki had a reputation for being a flirt in the area.
He remarked that no indigene would have considered marrying her and that they were surprised when Iyobosa, a resident of Upper Mission Road in Benin City, chose to marry her.
The controversy has also sparked conversations among young women in the area, with some jokingly praising Edeki as an example of how flirts can still find love and marriage.
The incident has left the community divided, with many questioning whether Iyobosa’s actions were justified or unnecessarily harsh.
Local elders are said to be considering a meeting to mediate between the families and restore calm to the community.
