A Nigerian journalist, Femi Adepoju, has shared his transformative experience in a UK church, which has led him to question his future attendance at African churches.
Femi revealed his thoughts through a Facebook post where he contrasted his experience in a Nottingham church with what he described as the typical practices in African churches.
In his post, Femi explained that after donating to a cause in his UK church, the pastor took the time to personally thank him and provided a detailed account of how the funds were spent.
He further mentioned that the church’s finance team even informed him that his donations could potentially reduce his tax burden.
Femi also recounted his involvement in a food bank group that supports the homeless, noting that when he inquired about the logistics, the assistant pastor provided a thorough explanation along with a note of gratitude.
According to him, this experience was free from the common issues he associated with African churches, such as abuse, dismissive replies, and a lack of accountability.
In his post, Femi expressed his disappointment with the practices in many African churches, urging them to adopt better accountability and ease of operation.
He concluded by stating that he might never attend an African church again, even if he returns to Nigeria.
This revelation has sparked conversations about the differences in church management and transparency between African and Western churches, raising questions about the need for reform within religious institutions in Africa.
