MTN Nigeria has announced the temporary shutdown of all its offices nationwide, today, July 30 following a violent attack on its Lagos branch.
The incident, which occurred at the Festac office, was sparked by the company’s enforcement of a directive to bar lines not linked to National Identity Numbers (NIN).
Videos circulating on social media show an angry crowd storming the Festac office, resulting in significant damage and prompting the decision to close all offices as a precautionary measure.
MTN Nigeria has emphasized the importance of customer and staff safety in making this decision.
In response to the escalating protests, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has intervened, ordering all telecom operators to restore the blocked lines.
The NCC has also provided an extended deadline, allowing subscribers more time to link their NINs to their SIMs.
MTN Nigeria has urged customers to utilize online platforms for their needs during this period and reassured the public that normal operations will resume once safety can be ensured.
