The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has issued a strong warning against certain fashion trends among the church’s pastors and members, particularly men with braided hair and women with heavy makeup.
Speaking during the church’s 72nd annual convention held at The Redemption City, Mowe, Ogun State, from August 5 to August 11, 2024, Pastor Adeboye expressed his discontent with these styles, stating that they would no longer be tolerated on RCCG altars.
Pastor Adeboye drew a parallel between men who braid their hair and Sango priests, the worshippers of the Yoruba god of thunder, emphasizing that such appearances are unacceptable in the church. He stressed that the church must not conform to modern trends that compromise spiritual values.
“In Yorubaland, the only men who braid hair are the priests of Sango, the god of thunder,” Adeboye remarked. “To continue as Sango priests? Not in this mission. Even after I’m gone, it will still not happen.”
Addressing female pastors and members, the cleric condemned the use of heavy makeup, false eyelashes, and other artificial enhancements. He cautioned that any pastor who adopts such appearances will be removed from the altar, underscoring the importance of maintaining modesty and authenticity in their appearance.
“Take this word from me,” Adeboye said. “When we find anybody among pastors, particularly female pastors, made up to look like a representative of Nollywood, we will walk her off the altar.”
He further explained that true believers should be content with their natural appearance, as God made no mistakes in their creation. “Even men with bald heads still look very handsome,” he noted, advising against artificial enhancements that alter one’s appearance.
Pastor Adeboye urged those who engage in such fashion choices to repent and embrace modesty, reminding them that they are “fearfully and wonderfully made.” He called on RCCG members to preserve the originality of God’s creation and avoid trends that could tarnish their spiritual image.
The convention, themed “Heaven,” served as a platform for Pastor Adeboye to reinforce the church’s stance on maintaining traditional Christian values in an era of evolving societal norms.
