Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who led Nigeria from 1999 to 2007, has stated that during his tenure, he took all necessary actions to ensure the nation’s progress.
Speaking recently at a lecture in Lagos, the former leader asserted that he could confidently “beat his chest” and declare that he fulfilled his duties for the country.
“When I was there, I did everything I should do for Nigeria and I can beat my chest and say that,”
Obasanjo remarked. He recalled assuming leadership with only N3.7 billion in reserves while the country was spending N3.5 billion to service debts.
He emphasized that securing debt relief was one of his administration’s major achievements.
“We got debt relief from a quantum debt of N3.36 billion, and when I left, we had over N25 billion in excess crude savings and a reserve of over N45 billion,” he said.
Obasanjo also noted that while Nigeria is a complex country, it is not difficult to manage if approached with honesty, adding, “You have to be honest with yourself, Nigeria, and your God.”
