The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has publicly acknowledged a misstatement regarding tithing, admitting that he was incorrect in asserting that believers who do not pay tithes would not enter heaven.
During a sermon at the church’s annual national youth convention at the RCCG Redemption Camp, Adeboye stated, “That is not in the Bible,” clarifying that such a claim is erroneous.
The pastor expressed his intention to address the congregation soon, saying, “I am going to apologize for making a mistake for saying that if you don’t pay tithe, you will not be making it to heaven. That is wrong.” He emphasized the biblical principles of making peace and holiness, highlighting that these virtues are essential for salvation.
Adeboye acknowledged the complexity of theological understanding, noting, “It is possible to be right and wrong at the same time.” He drew a parallel with scientific advancements, referring to the evolving understanding of light.
Despite his retraction, Adeboye reinforced the significance of giving to the Lord, sharing an inspirational story of a businessman who started with $500 and pledged to give generously. This man’s faithfulness led to a remarkable success, generating a turnover of $50 million within five years.
In his sermon, Adeboye urged the congregation to embrace “violent” praise and giving, likening it to King David’s fervent worship.
He emphasized that true devotion requires a passionate and generous spirit, much like King Solomon, who offered thousands of burnt offerings and received divine favor and peace in return.
As the RCCG community reflects on Adeboye’s words, his apology serves as a reminder of the need for careful interpretation of scripture and the importance of grace in the Christian faith.
