Paul Julius Goewam, a talented striker from Plateau State, Nigeria, who was celebrated just three weeks ago for his remarkable achievements, has tragically died in a car crash in Cyprus.
The 25-year-old footballer was driving on the Paralimni-Protaras road when his car collided with another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction around 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, near Pernera.
Julius had recently joined Cypriot club Enosis Neon Paralimni, moving from the Egyptian side El Gaish just three weeks prior to the accident.
His time at Enosis Neon Paralimni was brief, but he made a significant impact on the club.
In a heartfelt statement, Enosis Neon Paralimni FC expressed their profound sorrow over the loss of their player, describing him as someone who overcame adversity with incredible fortitude and tenacity.
The club’s statement read: “It is with deep sadness and pain that we express our sincere condolences on the unexpected loss of our footballer Paul Julius.
The tragic news of his death has shocked us all. Despite the hardships and sufferings he faced to join our family, he remained steadfast and determined to fulfill his goals.
His memory will live on in our hearts, and his absence will be felt. We are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.”
The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision, a 74-year-old man, is currently receiving treatment in the hospital but is not in critical condition.
The Famagusta Traffic Department has launched an investigation into the incident and is appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
