In a regrettable incident at Terminus Market in Jos, Plateau State, a Nigerian policeman fatally shot his colleague on May 22, 2024.
The tragedy occurred during an enforcement operation led by the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB).
Becksblog has learned that security personnel, such as police officers and soldiers, were recently dispatched by the state government to enforce restrictions on street trading in the region.
According to eyewitness Ibrahim Musa, the deceased officer was hit by an errant bullet fired by a member of the security team while patrolling the area.
A market official, speaking anonymously due to lack of authorization to engage with journalists, attributed the police officer’s death to an accidental discharge by his colleague.
According to him, “At approximately 12 o’clock on Wednesday, May 22, security personnel were in pursuit of traders when, unexpectedly, an officer mistakenly discharged his firearm, fatally hitting the policeman in the neck. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries instantly. Shortly after, officials from the Road Safety Corps arrived to transport the deceased officer’s body to a nearby hospital.”
The incident caused tension in the area, resulting in tear gas being deployed to disperse the crowd.
Inquiries prompted the spokesperson for the state police command, Alabo Alfred, to confirm ongoing investigations into the matter.
The Plateau Police Command stated that the state chapter of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) was handling the investigation.
