Nigerian music sensation, Rema, who has captivated global audiences with chart-topping hits like “Calm Down,” “Bounce,” and his latest track, “Hehehe,” recently opened up about his unique creative process.
In an exclusive interview he had recently, Rema disclosed a surprising fact about his songwriting—or rather, the lack of it.
“I don’t really write songs. I just go to the studio and have fun,” Rema explained. He shared that his musical process is spontaneous, often filled with expressions that aren’t even words. Recalling his first hit, he said, “The chorus wasn’t even a word. It was just me expressing myself, creating a vibe. In Nigeria, we call it ‘lamba’—it’s something you create out of the energy in the studio.”
Rema credits this free-flowing approach to his success, as it allows him to express his emotions in the moment without being bound by conventional language or songwriting rules.
When asked about his latest single, “Hehehe,” the artist revealed that the track was inspired by the criticism he has faced since entering the music scene. “The haters inspired ‘Hehehe’,” Rema said.
“I’ve been criticized since I dropped my first tape at 19. Over time, the game made me colder. Sometimes, you just want to give back that energy and pop out.”
