In a startling revelation, embattled Rivers State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tony Okocha, has openly confessed to his role in rigging local council elections during the administration of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
Okocha, who served as Amaechi’s Chief of Staff from 2007 to 2015, made this admission during a televised interview.
Okocha, recently removed as the Rivers APC Caretaker Committee Chairman by a Port Harcourt High Court, did not shy away from acknowledging his involvement in electoral malpractice.
He argued that his actions should be viewed as whistleblowing rather than criminal, stating, “On the issue of whether I rigged the election, I did not hide it. I should be praised as a whistleblower.”
The TV host quickly countered, suggesting that election riggers should face justice, a claim Okocha rejected. He likened his confession to a reformed criminal coming forward and argued that laws should not apply retroactively.
Okocha’s admission comes amid ongoing legal battles within the Rivers APC, where he claims his outspokenness is driven by a desire to prevent similar tactics from being used by others in the political arena.
