American billionaire Bill Gates has criticized Nigeria’s tax collection efforts, describing them as “pretty low” during an event in Abuja on September 3.
The co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation emphasized the need for increased funding to support essential services like education and health.
Gates highlighted the importance of citizens’ confidence in government programs and cited the foundation’s involvement in improving primary health care systems.
He stressed that efficient use of funds in health care could boost public trust and support for increased investment.
His comments follow recent statements by Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, who announced plans to propose a bill to raise the value-added tax from 7.5% to 10% to address fiscal challenges.
