In a recent interview, international music star Akon shared his deep disappointment over the separation of Nigerian music duo P-Square, comprised of brothers Peter and Paul Okoye.
The brothers, who rose to global fame for their groundbreaking contribution to afrobeats, went their separate ways in 2017, much to the dismay of fans and industry insiders alike.
“It broke my heart when I heard that P-Square aren’t together anymore. I mean, they’re family and shouldn’t let money separate them,” Akon remarked, emphasizing the strong bond that comes with siblinghood.
He pointed out that their unique dynamic as brothers was central to their success, noting, “Peter Okoye and Paul Okoye shared the same womb and were brothers for a reason.”
Akon went on to reflect on P-Square’s pivotal role in the rise of afrobeats, crediting the duo with helping to promote the genre internationally.
“It was the fact that P-Square were brothers and were together that made them who they were,” Akon continued. “P-Square worked so hard promoting afrobeats to the world, and the moment afrobeats got the attention it deserved, they split and destroyed everything they ever worked for.”
The artist acknowledged the pressures that come with both the music industry and personal relationships but expressed hope that the brothers could put their differences aside for the sake of their legacy.
“Peter and Paul are brothers. They can never sell the number of records or sell out the venues they did when they were together. Even if their problem is money, the fact remains that they can’t make the same amount of money separately.”
Akon concluded by expressing his wish for a reunion, underscoring the pride P-Square has brought to Africa. “I really hope they get back together real soon because they’re the pride of Africa.”
The sentiment echoes the feelings of many fans who continue to hope for the reconciliation of one of Africa’s most iconic musical acts.
