Doyin Okupe, a former presidential aide, has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing trip to the United Kingdom, describing it as a necessary opportunity for the president to reflect on his administration’s policies.
Okupe’s remarks were made during an interview with Nigerian print media in Lagos on Thursday.
On October 2, the presidency announced Tinubu’s departure from Abuja to the UK for a two-week vacation as part of his annual leave.
The presidency explained that the president would use the time for a working retreat to evaluate his administration’s economic reforms.
However, this trip has faced significant criticism from Nigerians who argue that it comes at a time when the country is grappling with severe economic hardship.
In response to these criticisms, Okupe described them as “uninformed,” arguing that the president needed a peaceful atmosphere to reflect and make necessary decisions, including a possible reassessment of his cabinet.
“I have read many uninformed criticisms of the president’s holiday trip abroad,” Okupe said. “From my understanding of how presidents operate during times of national crisis, the president’s decision to separate himself from the usual pressures of officials, friends, and associates is wise. It gives him the space to reflect on the last 17 months and chart a new path forward.”
Okupe further emphasized that staying within Nigeria would not provide the president the serene environment required for such critical reflection.
He added that Tinubu’s return after this retreat would bring positive changes for Nigerians, offering them relief and hope for a brighter future.
“His return will bring relief and comfort to the masses,” Okupe concluded.
