In a thought-provoking sermon, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), challenged conventional views on tithing, declaring that giving 10 percent of one’s income is merely a starting point for Christians.
Pastor Adeboye emphasized that while tithing is rooted in biblical teaching, he urged mature believers to transcend this basic practice and cultivate a spirit of greater generosity.
“Tithing, which is giving 10 percent of your income, is for beginners,” he stated, encouraging Christians to deepen their understanding of God’s blessings and respond with a more substantial financial commitment.
He argued that as individuals grow in their faith, they come to realize that God deserves even more than the minimal tithe.
Pastor Adeboye urged his congregation to consider giving 20, 30, or even 40 percent of their income based on how abundantly they have been blessed.
“A generous and sacrificial heart opens the door to more divine blessings,” he affirmed.
To illustrate his point, Pastor Adeboye drew an analogy from physics, likening the evolution of scientific understanding about light—now known to travel in waves rather than just in straight lines—to the growth Christians should experience in their approach to giving.
“It is wrong to limit yourself to 10% at a time when some of you should be paying 20%, 30%, or 40%,” he said passionately. “Giving should be done sacrificially and even violently when necessary.”
His message resonated with many in attendance, emphasizing that the journey of faith requires believers to continuously seek deeper levels of sacrifice and commitment, moving beyond basic requirements to embrace a life of abundant generosity.
