Toronto Police have arrested Amaka Sonnberger, a Nigerian national, following her online threats against Yoruba and Edo communities in Canada.
The arrest, made on September 1, 2024, comes after Sonnberger allegedly threatened to poison and kill members of these communities.
According to Constable Laura Brabant, Sonnberger was charged with uttering threats and is set to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on September 2, 2024, at 10:00 AM.
This case, classified as a suspected hate-motivated offence, follows a petition by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) to local authorities, including Mayor Patrick Brown of Brampton.
Toronto Police are treating the incident with gravity, given its potential hate-related motivations. The Hate Crime Unit (HCU) is involved, and the investigation may consider hate as an aggravating factor if a conviction occurs.
