The University of Jos, Plateau State, is grappling with a significant increase in its electricity bill, which has surged to N80 million per month from a previous N20 million.
This sharp rise is attributed to the higher electricity tariffs for Band A users, imposed by distribution companies.
Speaking at a recent event hosted by the University of Jos Alumni Association (UJAA) Lagos Chapter, the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ishaya Tanko, called for urgent support from the university’s alumni to help meet the increasing electricity expenses.
He emphasized the need to transition towards solar energy as a more sustainable and cost-effective solution for powering the university.
Professor Tanko lauded the ongoing support of the alumni association in infrastructure development and student services, underscoring the importance of continued collaboration between the university and its graduates.
He noted that this partnership was key to enhancing the institution’s reputation and achieving long-term goals.
During the event, several notable alumni were honored for their contributions. Among the awardees were Mr. Adewale Raji, former Group Managing Director and CEO of Odu’a Investment Co. Ltd.; Mr. Babatunde Ogala SAN, OFR, Principal Partner at Babatunde Ogala & Co.; and Dr. Agada Apochi, Group Managing Director and CEO of Unified Payments.
The trio was recognized at UJAA’s 2024 reception and dinner for their longstanding support of the university.
The Chairman of UJAA Lagos Chapter, Dr. Victor Ogwezzy, praised the event as a successful reunion, while the National President of UJAA, Sani Nuhu, urged members to continue their efforts to uplift the university, stressing the importance of achieving global standards in education.
